He immigratred to the US in 1890, going first to Pope County, Minesota. He moved to North Dakota iin 1893 He and Margrethe must have gone back to Norway after the 1900 census because they were both on a boat coming from Trondheim to America in 1902. Their sons Hans, Johannes, Jacob, and Nils were with them.

His birth year comes from his immigration record. In 1910, he immigrated back again from Norway to North Dakota via Manitoba. He was sponsored by his brother-in-law, Einar Skjei. Where did he go after that? Back to Norway it seems, based on his marriage in 1913. He was described as a "Skipper" in the marriage register.

His year of birth comes from his obituary. However, a ship passage record in 1908 says he was born in 1903.

Here is his obituary:
Ludwig Arthur Skjei passed away in Eatonia on March 29, 1963. He was born in Bottineau, North Dakota on March 20, 1901. He came to the Neidpath district with his parents in 1911, where he was married to Eldridge Haugen in 1928. The family moved to Eatonia in 1945, where they have since resided. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Jack Pierce [Anne] of Medicine Hat, Elaine and Sandra of Calgary, five sons, Douglas, Dennis, Glen, Gary and Paul, all of Eatonia, and also five grandchildren. There are also three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Murphy of Swift Current, Mrs. Viola Flanagan of Kamloops, B.C., and Mrs. Mildred Laverty of Camp Borden, Ontario. He was predeceased by his parents and one brother. Funeral services were held from St. Paul's Lutheran Church with internment in Eatonia cemetery.
