Obituary : Oscar James Smith
A VICTIM OF SHOOTING
Oscar Smith, Former Minneapolis Man, Buried There today.
Minneapolis , Oct 5 (by Journal Service) - The body of Oscar J. Smith , for many years a farmer here but immediately prior to his departure last spring for Holton engaged with his late wife in the photography business, arrived here today and funeral services were held this afternoon. Mr. Smith was the victim of a mysterious shooting which occurred at Holton Tuesday morning. In Holton Mr. Smith lived with his daughter, Mrs. Howard Henderson and farmed a small tract near the town, driving back and forth each day. It was his custom to carry a revolver in the car on these trips. Tuesday morning he went to the car to put the gun away, as usual, before breakfast. Mrs. Henderson heard a shot, and rushing out found her father with a bullet in his head. It is not known whether he struck the gun against something and accidently discharged it or whether he deliberately shot himself. The latter is not likely, relatives feel, since there is no known reason why he should take his own life. Today's funeral service was held at the Presbyterian Church at 2 o'clock. Rev. Evert in charge, and internment was in the Minneapolis cemetery.

In the document sworn to obtain his marriage license on November 13, 1813, he said that he was widower, of the parish of Tredington, Worcester. There is a John Whitehead, 60, labourer, in the 1841 census for St. Martin, Birmingham. It might be he. There is also a John Whitehead, 61, shoe maker, living in the parish of St. Thomas.

The date of his baptism comes from the parish records for Whichford. The dates for his death and burial come from the same records and the MI's.
From his will, I am assuming that he did not marry or have children if he did, neither his wife nor any offsrping survived. There is a John & Mary Timms in the parish records who have a child Anthony December 3, 1749. I have found a marriage for a John Timms and a Mary Hawkes of Whichford, in Honington. Warwickshire, on May 11, 1749. The entry says that they are both of Whichford. It might be this John Timms and it might be his son Anthony baptised in December 1749. There are no further baptismal entries for children of John and Mary Timms during this period in Whichford. There is an Anthony Timms of Whichford buried on March 31, 1750. Is this perchance the son? If that was the case, when did Mary die and where was she buried? I have decided that this JOhn Timms did not marry and the John Timms who married Mary Hawkes was someone else entirley.
I am beginning to think that another nephew married yet another niece. The will refers to his nephew John Timms, butcher in Chipping Norton. His wife is Mary Timms, his niece. In the 1791 Universal Brtish Directory in Chipping Norton, there is a John Timms, (F) Butcher.
In the will of his brother Edward Timms (married to Mary Rouse) of 1743, he and Walter Webb of Stourton are given a property in Stourton called Six Boys for a term of one hundred years. In the will of Edward Timms (who was married to Elizabeth Rouse) of 1840, that same property is given to his son Henry. Yet in his own will, he does not directly mention the property. Was it that property in Stourton in the possession of Walter Webb?
