With his pregnant wife and nine children, left Scotland in June 1832
to come to Canada. While still on board ship John was stricken with
cholera and died August 1st and was buried at sea.
Disembarking at Hamilton, Mrs. Beattie and her family proceeded to
London, following plans they had prepared before leaving their
homeland. Transporation for this part of their journey was by
'ox-sled'. They found accommodation with friends on Lot 24 in
Westminster Township, on the 4th Concession at the corner of the
Bostwick Road, where their tenth child, a son James, was born in
October. The family remained at this location for five years, moving
later to Lot 10, fifth Concession for a short time.
