WILLIAM BEATTIE was a shepherd for the Curk family at Moodly and Craikhope, at Annan, Scotland. He loved the rugged highlands and the sheep that roamed the hills, and if he was tempted to take his family to the new colonies, he resisted the temptation and continued the work he loved for sixty-eight years.

His sons did not share their father's reluctance, however, and the eldest, Andrew, came to Canada in 1823, settling near the Junction in Westminster (now Lambeth). Seven years later another son, James, with his wife, Margaret and their eight children, left Annan and sailed from Liverpool... James and his family bought their passage on a sailing vessel and arrived in York, (Toronto), in August, 1830. They were met by brother Andrew and spent some time at his home at the Junction while they looked for a place to establish themselves.
